Lanzarote
Coast ChallengeOne island. Seven days. One step closer.

From Sunday 15 November, Freya Finch walks the whole coast of Lanzarote: about 212 km in seven days, on foot, with no taxis, no buses, no shops and no restaurants. She sleeps where each day's walk ends and carries on the next morning, raising money for 1st Lanzarote Scouts and pulmonary arterial hypertension research in Gran Canaria.

The rules

No shortcuts

This is not a long walk each day and back to a comfortable hotel. The challenge is to complete the coast without making it easier.

On foot onlyNo car, taxi, bus, bike or lift. Every kilometre between stages is walked.
Sleep where she stopsA tent, her camper van or a friend's house, but only somewhere she has walked to.
No shops, no cafésNo supermarkets, no restaurants, no cafés, all week.
Supplies in the eveningFriends and family can bring food, water, clean underwear and essentials to wherever she has stopped.
No skipping sectionsThe aim is the whole coast. Where a path is closed or unsafe she goes inland and carries on.
Safety firstIf anything goes wrong, getting help comes before every rule above.
The route

Seven days round the island

From Playa Blanca up the wild west coast, over the north and back down the east to where she started. A planned route, not a timetable: paths and distances may change for safety or access.

About 212 km in all, on the trails she has walked in training: each day's real distance shows here once she has walked it. Day 3 goes inland over Haría and the Mirador del Río: the shore path under the Famara cliffs is closed.

What it's for

Two causes, split 50/50

Every euro raised is shared equally between them.

Scouts1st Lanzarote

The World Scout Jamboree 2027

Freya is Group Scout Leader of 1st Lanzarote Scouts. She and three of her Explorers have the chance to go to the World Scout Jamboree in Gdańsk, Poland, from 30 July to 8 August 2027: a once-in-a-lifetime gathering of Scouts from all over the world.

International Scouting costs a lot, and this half of the money helps get the Explorers there.

PAH research in Gran Canaria

Pulmonary arterial hypertension is high blood pressure in the vessels that carry blood from the heart to the lungs. They become narrow and stiff, so the right side of the heart has to work much harder, and over time it can weaken. People can look well and still get breathless and exhausted doing everyday things.

There is no cure yet. This half of the money supports the research team in Gran Canaria working on it, the team that helped Freya's mum.

Why Freya is doing it

Freya in a red Norway jacket by a snowy harbour
"The challenge is to keep going, one step at a time, even when it gets difficult."

Lanzarote has been Freya's home for almost 22 years. She runs Finchy Fitness in Playa Blanca, leads 1st Lanzarote Scouts, and is never far from something for the community. She likes setting herself goals that are, in her words, "a little bit mad".

There will be tired legs, heat, wind and moments when she wonders what on earth she has signed up for. That is part of the point. The quieter hours on the coast are also time to think about her family and her mum and dad, and she hopes, in some small way, to make them proud.

She'll be sharing it all, the hard bits and the funny bits, every day on the diary.

Walk a stretch with her

People can join Freya for sections of the route. The live map shows where she is the whole time she's walking, with a Meet her button for directions to her.

  • Find her on the live map: it's live whenever she's moving, so you can head to the coast and meet her on the route.
  • Want to walk a stretch? Message Freya on WhatsApp first so she knows to expect you.
  • Bringing supplies? Only in the evening, to wherever she has stopped. Arrange it with her.
  • Can't be there? Leave her a message below; she reads them every night.

Send Freya a message

Add a picture if you like: a selfie with a sign, a snap from meeting her on the route. Freya reads every message in the evening, and the ones she picks show here.

We only keep your first name, your message and your picture. Nothing shows until Freya has read it.

Questions

Good questions

Is it safe?

Freya plans each day and tells someone her route. Her family can always see exactly where she is, and if anything goes wrong, getting help comes before the rules. Where a path is closed or unsafe, like the shore under the Famara cliffs, she goes inland.

Where does the money go?

Everything raised is split 50/50 between 1st Lanzarote Scouts, to help Explorers get to the World Scout Jamboree 2027, and the pulmonary arterial hypertension research team in Gran Canaria.

Can I walk with her?

Yes, for a stretch. Use the live map to find her and message her on WhatsApp so she knows you're coming.

Can I bring her food or water?

Only in the evening, to wherever she has stopped for the night. That's one of the rules. Arrange it with her first.

Why is the live map sometimes behind?

Parts of the coast have no phone signal. Her phone saves her positions and sends them when she is back in range, so the line fills in.

Is it a record?

As far as we know, nobody has walked the whole coastline of Lanzarote in seven days like this. It's a personal challenge, not an official record.
